10 Good Reasons to Start a Blog

Blogging seems to be the in thing. There are so many great reasons why caregivers or anyone for that matter, should start a blog.  Many of these ideas would also fall into the category of a niche blog that we’ve already talked about. I thought I’d jot down 10 that came to my mind. Let me know if you can add to the list.

1. Chronicle a journey or trip. A blog is a great way to share your cross-country or international trip with friends and family. My daughter and her family recently spent the summer in Scotland. We felt so in touch with them and could experience the beautiful countryside and the historic and laid back culture with them through her weekly blog.

2. A personal blog is a great way to keep out of town friends and family informed on the “goings on” and growing up of your children. A personal blog is also a great place to put pictures of the kids and pets to share with friends and family.

3. A health blog. These blogs are created to help keep friends and family informed of a health condition you have. It’s a good way to let them know about upcoming appointments and treatments and how they can be praying. Caring Bridge and Care Pages are examples of a health blog. Once a visitor “joins” this type of blog and signs in, they can post comments of encouragement.

I’ve kept friends and family up to date on my son’s journey with Dystonia (a movement disorder) through his blog, www.Davidcampsdiary.blogspot.com.

4.  A How-To Blog. These blogs are great for teaching something especially through videos like cooking, art, sewing, other crafts, how to do just about anything. Many how-to blogs are mainly video blogs called vlogs.

5.  A teaching or information blog is created to educate people about a specific topic. I have a friend who works with an organic skincare and makeup company. Every few days she posts some very informative and interesting things about a specific product and why she likes it.

6. A Business blog. People who have a brick and mortar business start blogs to get more traffic to their business and to have another avenue to sell their products and services.

7. A study blog. This kind of blog is like an online notebook. Pat Flinn started a blog just to help him study for an important architect exam. The interesting thing was that other people who were also studying for the same exam found his blog through a search which helped them study as well. Over time, when he realized what was happening, he took the information from his blog and made it into a study guide for people.

8. An inspirational blog. This type of blog is created to inspire and encourage other people. Maybe it’s a Bible Study or devotional blog like Meet Me in the Meadow by Roy Lessin. I have an inspirational blog too for special needs parents. It is www.gracetodayblog.com.

9. A forum blog. This is a blog where people with a common interest can come together to discuss different topics and learn from each other.

10. Another stream of income. Although any blog can be monetized, some blogs are created for the sole purpose of selling affiliate programs or goods for the main purpose of creating another stream of income.

Here are the 10 reasons that came to my mind. Can you think of more? Please share! Do you have a blog you would like to share?

I think it’s a great idea for everyone to start some type of blog. In the near future I plan to talk about where to begin with blogging. So stay tuned!

Blessings!
